Traction transformer

Traction transformers transmit the electrical energy of a three-phase power system to two single-phase traction lines each with a load. Two single-phase traction lines supply power to the up and down locomotives respectively. In an ideal situation, two single-phase loads are the same. So, a traction transformer is used as a three-phase to two-phase transformer.

Traction transformer is a special voltage level power transformer that should meet the requirements of drastic changes in traction load and frequent external short circuits. It is the "heart" of traction substations. China adopts three types of traction transformers: three-phase, three-phase - two-phase, and single-phase, so traction substations are also divided into three categories: three-phase, three-phase - two-phase, and single-phase.
